Painting frames / Peindre un cadre

Painting frames is so easy! You can chose whatever colour suits your inspiration. It's a great way to personalise your interior! In 3 steps you can give colour and patina to any wooden frame.

  • Step 1: Paint 2 layers of the colour of your choice
  • Step 2: Dry-brush with some old white
  • Step 3: Add some dark wax
I like to use Annie Sloan chalk paint so I don't need to sand down the wooden frame before applying the paint. In this example I use Duck egg blue. It's a nice colour with a "cottage" feel, but on this frame which has nice details, the result is kind of flat. To give it more depth I chose to use the dry-brush technique which emphasises the relief. Once the last coat of paint is totally dry, I lightly dip a thick brush into some "old white" paint and rub it off on a cloth, then brush it on the frame. First I lightly swipe the brush following the direction of the wood grain. Then with a diagonal movement I emphasise the relief. This technique is very intuitive, the idea is to have only a little bit of paint on your brush, hence "dry-brush", so that it's only applied partially depending on the relief of the surface and its texture. I let it dry completely. I apply a coat of clear wax. Then I apply some dark wax with a brush, quickly wiping with a clean cloth to remove the excess wax and blend it in.

Step 2: dry-brushing some old white
Etape 2: Ajouter du blanc au pinceau sec

The frame to the right has yet to be "dry-brushed"

Step 3: The dark wax
Etape 3: la cire foncée

The frame to the right has not yet been dark waxed

This is how you can transform a plain old frame into something charming for your interior, whether for a gallery wall, for some family photos or a beautiful work of art!
