Back to school! / C'est la rentrée!

Today was the first day back in school here in France. My heart felt heavy but my boys were delighted to see their friends and there was no tears!
For this special day I chose to customize a little desk and rattan chair that I bought in a car booth sale. I think the desk might come from Ikea. I chose to cover the top of the desk with some Ikat print wrapping paper which goes well with the colour Provence from Annie Sloan. I also covered a little cushion with a vintage style fabric with the same touch of blue. I painted pale yellow little socks to the desk and chair. To finish I applied a few layers of waterproof varnish, even to the paper on the desk. Now this cute little desk is ready to be put to the test of a new school year!  

Aujourd'hui c'était le premier jour d'école en France! J'avais le coeur lourd, mais mes garçons étaient ravis de revoir leurs copains, et il n'y a même pas eut de larmes! 
Pour la rentrée j'ai choisi de customiser un petit bureau d'enfant et une chaise en rotin que j'ai acheté dans un vide grenier. Je pense que le bureau vient d'Ikea. J'ai choisi de recouvrir le dessus du bureau avec un papier cadeau au motif Ikat qui se marie bien avec la teinte Provence d'Annie Sloan. J'ai aussi recouvert un petit coussin d'un tissus de style vintage avec la même touche de couleur bleu. J'ai peint de petites chaussettes jaunes pâles au bureau et à la chaise. Pour finir j'ai passé une couche de vernis lessivable sur la chaise et le bureau, y compris sur le dessus en papier.  Maintenant ce petit bureau sympa est prêt à subir le test d'une nouvelle année scolaire!

A Grandmother's Armchair/ Le fauteuil de Grand-mère

Firstly sorry for the lack of posts, we've been enjoying the summer holidays with friends and family... ah the distractions!
Tout d'abord toutes mes excuses pour le manque de ponctualité, nous profitons des vacances d'été avec des amis et de la famille... ah toutes ces distractions!

 


One of my neighbour inherited his grandmother's armchair. A lovely wooden armchair, probably made in Alsace (France) about a century ago. It was getting wet and damaged on his front porch, but he just didn't have the space for it. So he wanted to find it a new home... so guess who adopted it!?
Un de mes voisins avait hérité du fauteuil de sa grand-mère. Un joli fauteuil en bois, probablement fabriqué en Alsace il y a un siècle. Il se mouillait et s'abîmait sous son pavillon, mais il n'avait pas sa place dans la maison de mon voisin. Il lui fallait une nouvelle maison... alors devinez qui l'a adopté!?  

This was a quick and easy makeover. I wanted to place it in our bedroom which has a white and blue scheme, so I had to once again take my paint brushes out! I gave 2 coats of white to the wooden frame, then distressed it with sand paper. I finished by some clear wax. For the green velvet cushions I brushed some cobalt blue acrylic paint diluted with some water. I think it turned out great for my bedroom!
C'était un relooking facile et rapide. Je voulais que ce fauteuil prenne sa place dans notre chambre, dont le thème est bleu et blanc, donc j'ai du encore une fois sortir mes pinceaux! J'ai passé 2 couches de peinture blanche sur le bois, puis avec du papier de verre j'ai poncé pour lui donner une apparence usée. J'ai fini par de la cire. Pour les coussins en velours vert je les ai brossé avec un gros pinceau imbibé de peinture acrylique bleu cobalt bien diluée à l'eau. Je trouve que le résultat est parfait pour notre chambre!

Sculped Mirror/ Miroir sculpté

When I found this mirror it was damaged in place and the finish was a funny shade of orange, but its shape and size were interesting and I decided to give it some French elegance. First I repaired the damages with a plaster paste. I gave it two coats of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint French Linen, then I dry-brushed some old white over to bring out the details of the sculpted frame. I finished with some clear wax and a little bit of dark wax on the top bow to make it stand out. It was a quick and easy update and I am really happy about the way it turned out! Quand j'ai trouvé ce miroir il était en mauvais état, le cadre était abîmé et la patine orange n'était pas à mon goût. Mais de forme et de taille il était intéressant, alors j'ai décidé de lui donner une touche d'élégance à la française. D'abord j'ai réparé le cadre avec du mastic. Ensuite j'ai peint deux couches de Annie Sloan Chalk Paint couleur "French Linen", puis j'ai passé du "Old White" avec un pinceau presque sec pour mettre en valeur le relief. J'ai fini avec de la cire transparente et une petite touche de cire foncée pour faire ressortir le noeud du dessus. C'était un re-looking simple et rapide et je suis vraiment satisfaite du résultat! Le reste en image...

Frames, frames, frames... / Des cadres, des cadres, des cadres...

At the moment I'm working on a dozen of old frames I salvaged recently. It allows me to experiment new techniques and get really creative with colour combinations. Here's a few of them...
En ce moment je suis concentrée sur la quinzaine de cadres que j'ai récupéré récemment. Ca me permet de tester de nouvelles technique, de nouvelles combinaisons de couleurs et d'être encore plus créative! En voilà quelques un...



This frame was originally completly golden, but a kind of gold that was too shiny and plastic looking. I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint French Linen and Duck Egg Blue. I used each colour layer after layer, waiting for the first layer to dry before applying the second colour, and wiping with a cloth. Then I used dark wax to add patina. I like the Gustavian look with the original golden coming through.
Ce cadre était à l'origine complètement doré, mais d'un doré qui avait l'air trop brillant, comme du plastique. J'ai utilisé Annie Sloan Chalk Paint French Linen et Duck Egg Blue. J'ai travaillé la couleur couche par couche, en attendant que la première couleur soit sèche avant d'appliquer la seconde, et en essuyant la peinture avec un chiffon. Puis j'ai patiné à la cirée foncée. J'aime le côté Gustavien de la teinte et du doré original qui ressort. 

 
For the following frame I wanted brighter colours but the same classical look with some golden. I used ASCP Country Grey and Provence. I really enjoyed working on the details to bring out the moldings. This time I used golden paint to add the finishing touch.
Pour ce cadre j'ai voulu égayer les couleurs mais garder un côté classique avec des dorures. J'ai utilisé Annie Sloan CP Country Grey et Provence. Je me suis amusée à faire ressortir les moulures avec une touche de peinture dorée.  

For this very simple wooden frame I chose to work with the blue tones because I wanted to use it to frame a watercolour agate that I painted using Amy's tutorial @ Delineate your Dwelling, a blog that I absolutely adore, thanks a million Amy!
I used ASCP colours: pure white, napoleonic blue, louis blue and greek blue. This time working them all at once, without waiting to dry between layers, I used a small brush and worked like an artist, placing bits of paint where I wanted, following my inspiration! I finished with a mixture of clear wax and a tiny bit of dark wax. And now it's perfect for my little boy's room! 
Pour ce cadre tout simple j'ai décider de travailler dans les tons de bleu car je voulais l'utiliser pour encadrer pour une aquarelle que j'ai faite à partir du tutorial de Amy @ Delineate your Dwelling, un blog que j'adore, un grand merci Amy! 
J'ai utilisé ASCP les couleurs: pure white, napoleonic blue, louis blue et greek blue. Cette fois-ci sans attendre que la première couleur sèche, j'ai travaillé avec un petit pinceau, un peu comme un artiste qui peint une toile, à l'inspiration! J'ai fini avec un tout petit peu de cire foncée. C'est parfait pour la chambre de mon petit garçon!
